Sarah Richardson, Sarah's House

Sarah Richardson, Sarah's House "Not every kitchen remodel involves a gut job. I say, 'Love everything you've got, and make it seem new!' We upgraded these wood cabinets with paint and gave the room a retro diner vibe," says Sarah.

Colors and Countertops "Dark wood islands are a recurring kitchen trend for a decade, but not be a bit daring and do something light and bright? This one's little, so it can easily be sanded yet another colour if the urge strikes. I really like natural stone and I always will, but I've quartz in my kitchens, and I urge it to customers, too. It's super durable, and heat- and - scratch-resistant -- also, it does not stain, as it comes in a lot of colors," says Sarah. Get the look: Breath of Fresh Air paint color by Benjamin Moore

Cabinets "Drawers could be expensive to construct than cupboards, but I find they're more versatile and less likely to become a disorganized mess. For extra storage inside this kitchen, I used cheap wooden stair treads from Lowe's to create open shelving in the front of the window," says Sarah.

Lighting "A kitchen with no pendants can feel institutional, but include too many and you've got a lighting showroom! That's where recessed ceiling lights -- to illuminate work zones -- pick up the slack," says Sarah. Get the look: Kichler Fresnel Lens pendant in polished nickel, $253, lampsplus.com

Flooring "Know your limits, both financially and functionally. We replaced the existing linoleum floor in here with marbled-finish Marmoleum tiles. Shifting to stone would have raised the elevation of the floor and crept in the baseboards, and it would have cost double," says Sarah. Backsplash "Here is where to create a statement and tie your entire colour scheme together. This mosaic tile -- a mix of glass and stone -- had all the colors we used in the area, and it arrived in 12-inch x 12-inch sheets which were simple to install with no distinctive cuts," says Sarah. Meg Caswell, Meg's Great Rooms Meg says, "Just because a kitchen is a functional space does not mean it can not be entertaining. It must reflect your character: If you like to throw parties, make it party central!"

Colours "I enjoy kitchens to have a sophisticated feel. So here we'd abundant grey on the cabinets but extra shade with a fuchsia-red glass backsplash which extends all the way up into the ceiling behind the range. The floral Roman shade on the window adds a little more color to the space, and also the butcher-block island calms the palette down," says Meg. Cabinets "If I am constructing custom cabinetry, then I really like to specialize it with dividers and rollout apparatus. But in this area, we retained lots of the present cabinets, therefore I added work with really cool backsplash organizers. They shop everyday items like spoons and spices while maintaining the counters clear," says Meg.

Counters "Carrera marble comes with an elegant appearance that goes with everything. People today shy away from marble only because they believe that it can be hard to maintain, but it is actually a very durable substance, and history proves it : Europeans have been using it for centuries! Sure, it absorbs stains, but I think that only adds to its pretty patina," says Meg.

Lighting "I constantly use can light above the counters, and under-cabinet lights so the prep space is illuminated. However, I never miss a chance for a decorative fixture at a kitchen, like a striking chandelier within the island," says Meg. Get the look: Haggas pendant lamp, $60, IKEA shops

Appliances and Backsplash "You do not have to adhere to one suite in the event the individual appliances don't suit your needs, but stay with one complete and style of handle to tie everything together. As for the backsplash, tempered glass that's painted from supporting has a sleek, solid colour throughout. And it is amazingly functional: Just spray it with glass cleaner and operate a cloth over it," says Meg.

John Colaneri and Anthony Carrino, Kitchen Cousins "We look a lot of "transitional" Baths: They are in between traditional and modern, which is easy to live with for quite a long time," say John and Anthony.

Colours "Color is our basic, so we're constantly going to throw something bright in the kitchen. We picked the pink, gray and white palette in this room based on a scrap of wallpaper that reminded the proprietor of her childhood home," say John and Anthony. Cabinets "Ask yourself the amount of cabinets you really need. Just because you have the space does not mean you need to fill it with cupboards. We kept the chimney quite spare in this area since the homeowner didn't have a lot to store," say John and Anthony.

Counters "We're huge proponents of granite as it's practically indestructible. Additionally, it comes in a variety of finishes, from solid colors to granite and marble look-alikes," say John and Anthony. Appliances "We tell clients to search for counter-depth refrigerators instead of deeper models that stick out of the cabinetry. You get a more custom appearance like that. And anything Energy Star helps with the bills," say John and Anthony.

Lighting and Backsplash "Recessed high hats are a go-to for us. They do the hard job of lighting the kitchen but still create a warm appearance. We place ornamental lighting over an island or even the sink. Black grout accentuates the design of a backsplash -- in this situation, a diamond pattern -- and it never looks dirty, such as white grout can," say John and Anthony. Casey Noble, Design on a Dime "Some rooms should feel just like calm retreats. However, a kitchen is full of life and energy, so that you can make bold choices," says Casey.

Colors "I'm always working on a strict budget, so paint is one of my principles. In here we used glowing green to the cabinets for a throwback feel. I added red to a repurposed dresser-turned-island that can wheel round the kitchen. It does not look too Christmasy since the green is minty and the red has a lot of orange in it," says Casey. Get the look: Thyme Green and Firecracker, both by Behr

Cabinets "Open shelves extend a space, but there's a good deal of pressure to generate everything on them seem nice. That's why you will need plenty of shut space for canned products and other things you wish to stash away. Here we added extra storage at the dining nook with a lift-top bench, which retains pots and pans," says Casey. Get the look: Amerock knob in cherry-stained maple, $3, sears.com

Counters "Resuscitate first tile countertops and backsplashes by including a thick enamel coating. You need to hire an expert to do this -- it is similar to refinishing a tub. It gives the tile a consistent finish which makes it look new with no presentation," says Casey. Get the look: Use cloth to hide storage beneath half-cabinets. Try out Ticktock in scarlet, $25 per lawn, calicocorners.com

Lighting "I'm a lover of pendants, so we inserted one within the banquette to make the room feel much more amorous. When you have the distance within an island or counter, a trio of pendants always looks great," says Casey.

Floors "Black and white linoleum tiles are a kitchen no-brainer. They're totally classic, therefore cheap and very easy to set up yourself. A checkerboard pattern goes out of style," says Casey.
