Camille's Room

Camille's Room Camille Flurry's Athens, Ga., bedroom is the perfect case of a tween area done right. To create a one-of-a-kind, diverse, super-cool space, Camille's mom, Amy, combined handed-down family bits with finds from local flea markets, vintage boutiques and art festivals. The white bed and nightstand first belonged to Amy as a child. She supplemented these finds with traditional area rugs from neighborhood shops. The chandelier is a budget-saver by a local lighting firm that Amy customized with red spray paint to decorate Camille's room.

Camille's Room From her very own treasured blue and orange Lanvin dress ...

Camille's Room ... to cherished collectibles in her daughter Camille's bedroom, author, stylist and supermom Amy Flurry is a lover of all things classic.

Camille's Room One of the most treasured items in Camille's room is a handed-down wooden vanity. She uses it to carry a number of her everyday items, like an aged blue journal, 1980s sunglasses and a seafoam-green-toned java cup -- perfect for displaying her ready source of lollipops.

Camille's Room Camille's vanity has been passed down to her by her maternal grandmother. Its worn-in, aged wood exterior is ideal for an active, hula-hooping tween like Camille. Her mother has no fear of bumps and dings on the furniture because they simply add to the piece's antique charm.

Camille's Room Graphic, hand-painted wall layouts are an excellent, non-committal approach to include vibrant, one-of-a-kind focal points into some tween's space. After a tween outgrows the design, simply paint it over. Camille's layout is a contemporary, graphic representation of a chrysanthemum that was created as a present from local painter and family friend Lou Kregel. The layout sports two Sherwin-Williams paint colours, blue-green "Restful" and yellow-green "Gleeful."

Camille's Room Mom and daughter share a fondness for all things handmade. Amy creates custom couture creations from newspaper through her studio, Paper Cut Project, and Camille has filled her space with handmade accents. The poppy, floral bedding is from India Rose, the knit dolls are from Blabla, along with the framed print hanging over the headboard is by Portland artist Emily Martin. Art festivals are an excellent resource for finding original prints at affordable rates, as Amy discovered when she picked this up print for just $24 at a vacation market.

Camille's Room Handmade accessories, whether for the entire world of interiors or the area of style, are always growing in popularity, especially among tweens. Aside from her Blabla critters, Camille's recycled plastic bracelets and headbands are on very top of her list of abso-faves.

Camille's Room Amy explains, "People are from Senegal. We purchased them in a little shop in the Marais district of Paris called CSAO, right around the corner in our flat once we stayed a few summers ago. Every week the children would purchase a few more. From the end of the summer, Camille had an armful!"

Camille's Room Nostalgia comes in all forms in Camille's room. Not only is that the bed the same one her mom once slept in, but Camille has turned into a massive fan of the same iconic sneakers that were popular when her mom was her age: high-top Converse All Stars. Converse lovers are now able to create their own custom set of high-tops or low-tops in Converse.com.

Camille's Room Even though they may feel years beyond having their kindergartner school art posted on the refrigerator, tweens still prefer to display their self-made creations within their rooms. Camille made this teal elephant out of paper mache in art class. She keeps it on screen on the walls near her bed.

Camille's Room Vintage hand-knit creations which defy trends and fads -- such as these colorful dolls out of Blabla -- are excellent for accessorizing tween rooms. They are colorful and graphic sufficient to create a room enjoyable, plus kids and adults alike can enjoy their timeless construction. While shopping for personal accent pieces, it's wise to think about the longevity of every item's "coolness." When it's equally as cool to Mom and Dad as it's for their tween, it is likely it will remain in style indefinitely.

Camille's Room Most designers and stylists suggest having at least something that's truly alive in every room in the home. When it comes to women' rooms, particularly tweens, fresh flowers are an exceptional option. Among the most beloved cut flowers for designers is the architectural and feminine peony. As cherished as the peony is, it can be a pricy improvement at $35 each bunch. Contemplate tulips as a fantastic alternative -- they continue approximately every week and cost between $8-$12 per bunch.

Camille's Room When it comes to technologies of the 1960s and 1970s, the expression "everything old is new again" couldn't be truer for tween rooms. Record players and vinyl LPs are fresh discoveries for tweens, and enjoyable nostalgia for parents. Camille often invites friends over to hula-hoop whilst listening to documents. Her favorites are records from the 1970s which were handed down from her dad, Alan. Flea markets are the best source for finding old record players and documents themselves. To ensure a record player is in working order, always test by playing an album in the store or boutique. Do not forget to inquire about replacement needles.

Camille's Room Considering that the coal-burning fireplace in Camille's area is no longer functional, Amy transformed it into display space for some of her favourite things: unique artwork, a classic doll and interesting medals. Amy points out the white and blue botanical diptych, noting: "Our good friend and exceptionally talented artist Rinne Allen does these amazingly lovely light drawings as a means to conserve some of the attractiveness of the foliage she and her mother, both Trainers, love so much. Rinne invited Camille down to her studio and, collectively, they left this series of light drawings"

Camille's Room Glass-eyed rubber dolls -- believed creepy by a few and trendy by other people -- have remained a popular collectible by lovers of all things classic. A superb resource to get vintage-loving-tweens and/or their vintage-loving-parents, is Etsy.com, that is also home to numerous shops specializing in vintage-inspired doll clothes.

Camille's Room For flexible spaces that make tweens feel at home, consider choosing blues and greens like Camille's robin's-egg-blue walls ("Meander Blue" from Sherwin-Williams). Though Camille's bedroom has a general feminine vibe, so it feels welcoming enough to older brother Ellis, that enjoys the trendy, hip, vintage look of his sister's space.

Ellis' Room The most impactful design elements of Ellis' bedroom would be the graphic, modern bull-eyes painted in his room's focal wall. Hand-painted by family painter and friend Lou Kregel, each bull-eye includes five accent colors. From the outside, the C2 Paints are: "Chamomile" C2-153, "Larkspur" C2-313, "Solo" C2-128, "Calypso" C2-089 and "Hydrangea" C2-315. Ellis' mother, Amy, found the classic brass bed a local vintage shop. Almost as large a fan of Blabla as his sister, Ellis's bed sports a pair of the knit ancestral creations.

Ellis' Room Ellis' space is a huge hit for family and friends, largely due to its amazing architectural capabilities. The dark wood doorway was returned to its original tone by Ellis' daddy, Alan, who stripped and restored the doorway. To breathe new life to the old hardwood flooring, Amy and Alan had it painted a Sherwin-Williams tone referred to as "Adriatic Sea" in porch and floor paint at a high-gloss finish. The black globe was a gift from Ellis' paternal grandmother, and the blonde midcentury modern dresser was a regional Athens, Ga., vintage-store locate.

Ellis' Room One of the most significant aspects of successful tween bedroom layout is to reserve open space for actions. The basketball internet and open area in front of Ellis' cupboard inspire impromptu Nerf basketball matches between Ellis and his dad, Alan, who reports playing his fair share of basketball in his tween days, also.

A Well-Curated Family Mother and daughter show that classic and handcrafted go. In the end of a long day, Amy -- sporting her classic Lanvin apparel -- cuddles with her daughter, Camille, who's sporting her very own trademark style: a Parisian, recycled, handcrafted headband.
